Traditional MI Trainings: introducing the concepts
Awareness-building (3-6 hours): The awareness building training focuses on basic MI concepts. Participants learn some key MI vocabulary and basic building blocks of MI. This training focuses on the use of the guiding and empathetic style that is fundamental to MI, but can include brief practice of one MI skill.
Skills-based (12-32 hours): The skills-based training is a 2 or 3-day training that provides participants with a broad foundation in the concepts and skills of MI. These trainings follow Miller and Moyer's 8 Learning Tasks (2006). The multi-day format allows participants to explore many MI concepts in depth including the MI spirit, the four processes of MI and various types of motivations. Participants are given ample time for guided practice of MI skills during the class through real play, case studies and demonstrations. Typically the two or three days of training are separated by one week, allowing participants to practice the skills in real world settings and come back with informed questions and learning goals.

Continuing MI Education: solidifying learning and behavior change
Post-training Communities of Learning / Skills Groups (1.5 hours each): These consulting groups function to support participants ongoing development of MI skills and have been shown to be vital in creating proficient MI practitioners and promoting an MI culture among an agency. Communities of Learning are structured to encourage practice, discussion and self-reflection to empower participants and build self-efficacy.
Booster Trainings (2-4 hours): Booster trainings focus on more advanced concepts of motivational interviewing. These trainings can focus on working with specific populations, issues or combining MI with other therapeutic modalities. Booster trainings can be developed based on an agency assessment to develop needed skills or aspects of the MI spirit among staff.
MI Champion Program: An MI champion program fosters the development of MI Champions who will act as promoters, trainers or mentors in the use of MI. MI Champions are supported with the tools and training needed to help inspire colleagues and promote a culture of MI within the agency.
Coding and Coaching: Individuals submit 20 minute recordings of clinical interactions for coding using the MITI 4. The individual is then provided with personalized feedback to aid in the learning of MI.
Leadership Training: The success of agency culture change and staff behavioral change hinges on managers, supervisors and leadership. Leadership training is designed to support supervisors and management in creating and maintaining a positive work culture. Management is provided with tools and guidance to help staff continue their learning and use of MI.
